Serious thoughts
Apr. 12th, 2004 07:57 pmI've been quiet the last few days because I've been struggling with some pretty heavy stuff. Like what I'm going to do for the rest of my life. See, I tend to go about things backwards. For instance, instead of going to Beloit with plans to be Anthro major and then changing to something else, I started out something else and changed to an Anthro major. Many people have a career, then go into library school to be a librarian, specializing in their field. I have no field. So now I need to decide.
I always kinda figured I'd go with medical librarianship. I know medicine fairly well (being the daughter of a doctor and a nurse, as well as having done some work in that field). But I find myself going, is that what I want to do? See, tehre's a local law college that will pay part of your tuition if you already have a library degree. I'm seriously considering it. One of the problem with medical librarianship is that my background is social science, not life science. And if I went the general librarianship route, I'd need to get a second masters....
My plan is to speak with some people this week who are lawyers. While I've never really considered law before, several people (including my family) have encouraged me, saying thatmy background in Anthro is perfect and that I'd really enjoy it. And since I'm looking at librarianship, I don't quite bhave to focus in on a single area of law, the way you would if you were planning to practice. Finally, in the plus column, I have a serious interest in animal law. There aren't many people who parctice in that area (and not many classes offered) but it would help with my interest in doing rescue later in life.
But, like I've said before, it's not a field I've ever considered before. I never saw myself as a lawyer or going to law school. So I'm left with a lot to think about it. And, mainly, right now, I'm just confused.

Date: 2004-04-13 07:30 am (UTC)I know exactly what you're going through -- I was the same way when I up and decided one day that I wanted to go to Law school. In the end, I've decicded to get my masters instead, but I am currently attempting to switch to a LLM in Int'l Law with Int'l Relations.
I say -- don't limit yourself. As a friend pointed out to me, we all make choices about the future. But we can always make new choices later.
