As much as I enjoy her books, I have the sudden urge to whack JK Rowling upside the head. There's an interview with Terry Pratchett, where he points out --correctly-- that Rowling's fame is at the expense of teh rest of the fantasy genre. Some of her comments are just rude.

In a recent interview with Time magazine, Rowling said she was "not a huge fan of fantasy" and was trying to "subvert" the genre.

JK Rowling recently launched Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince The magazine also said Rowling reinvented fantasy fiction, which was previously stuck in "an idealised, romanticised, pseudofeudal world, where knights and ladies morris-dance to Greensleeves".

If she thinks she's subverting the genre, I'm sorry to tell her that several writers got there ahead of her. Apparently, things like dark fantasy and urban fantasy don't even exist in her world. Seriously, if she thinks she's unique, I'm sorry to tell her, but the patronizing, contempt for your fan base attitude these comments show is one most of us are familiar with. In my exerpience, it means a one trick wonder who has no success with their later endevours. I'll be pretty surprised if she's very successful post-Potter.

Still, it's clear she's somewhat talking out her ass when she calls it "subverting" the genre. I mean, really, while a lot of fun, there's nothing in the HP series that hasn't been done before, often several times, by the fantasy genre.

Someone brought the article to the attention of Neil Gaiman, who said that it was badly researched. He makes a good case for it being shoddy journalism, actually.

So... she's the mcDonalds of fantasy?

As I seem to recall Stephen King once saying he was the mcDonalds of horror...

Bad for you and leaves a nasty aftertaste in your mouth? Not really. Maybe the popcorn of fantasy?
