Fandom fun

Saw Batman Begins. Really liked the movie. Holmes was... well, I'm betting when she got the part she was thinking "Wow, starring with all these great actors will be great for my career." Instead, it just highlighted what a weak actress she is. Batman is a universe full of complex, three dimensional characters. She resembled a paper doll being marched across the screen.

I'm thinking everyone's a bit wrong about about Isabelle's powers. I think she simply reflects a person's expectations and feelings back at them. The guys who wanted to kill the family killed themselves. Jordan wanted to see himself successful and he did. The first time, he wanted to harm her and she reflected that back at him. Heidi wanted to bond with her mother, and what better way than a serious, non-fatal illness? That Lily could "communicate" with her could be simply a reflection of her own fears and thoughts.

In other aspects, how cool was it that Kyle was the shooter? Totally, totally not expecting that as the result of his blackouts. That was one heck of a twist.

Oh yeah. Part of me wonders if Kyle is the equivalent of a "failsafe" for the 4400-- if they go too far off the Future Guys' script, then Kyle gets activated to take them out.

Which begs the question of, just how benevolent are these future guys, anyway?

I agree about Isabelle. She's a baby, and she doesn't know better, but I don't think she'd feel so jealous of a grown sister, if she could even really comprehend that, to hurt her. What happened to Jordan is *so* much of a "careful what you wish for" that I think you've got it right.

Could not agree more about La Holmes. Unannoying, but brought nothing to the picture at all.

I'm sure most of the 4400 would say "not very." After all, their lives were totally uprooted and changed. I mean, Maia's one of the most well-adjusted of those we've seen and look how hard it's been for her. She can't even go to a sleepover without having things thrown in her face.

Ooo, that's a very interesting idea on Isabelle. I hadn't considered that. I'll have to think through all the examples of her powers that we've seen, to see how that might work itself out. I think most of it works, but I'm not so sure about Heidi. A ruptured spleen could have killed her, if not caught, and Isabelle (maybe?) wouldn't have known if it'd be caught. Although as a parent, she does strike me as very scary because of the problem of necessary discipline. What's she going to be like when she hits the Terrible Twos? 8}

Anyway, I haven't heard that theory before, and it makes a certain sense.

On Jordan, I think he's coming back, and that's part of why Kyle was the shooter. His heretofore unrevealed talent is not dying. (g) Between he and Shawn, we're really racking up the Christ imagery.

I'm not sure Isabelle's powers are under her control at all, so how would you discipline her? If her powers do act like a mirror, then the damage to Heidi came from Heidi, not Isabelle. But both Heidi and Isabelle are young and might not understand the consequences of such things.

And, yes, the Christ imagery is HUGE. They came to save the world, right? Plus the 4400 Centers as a cult thing (though it seems a bit more like Scientology there). And when Jordon's body disappered, the first thing I thought was "Dude, he bodily ascended into Heaven!"

Good point.

No, I didn't mean discipline her for the power things. (g) I just meant for normal kid stuff. It may be hard for her parents to act without fear towards her, and do the necessary. Kids will misbehave, then tell you they hate you when you send them to their room for it, but you still have to send them to their room. Will Lily and Richard be able to do that, or will they pull back out of fear that she'll retaliate? Even if they do figure out that things come from others, not from Isabelle, there are times when any parent, no matter how much s/he loves a child, feels anger and resentment towards the child (just as kids do to parents). It's just part of family life. It doesn't usually last any length of time, but if Isabelle's power is reflective, it could become almost impossible to live with her without getting hurt. A lot would depend on whether her powers can discern between fleeting rage and something more insidious, and I'm not sure they can. I doubt Heidi is intrinsically cruel. (g) So that's what's really worrisome, about Isabelle. It would make dealing with her extremely artificial, since one could never express any genuine negative emotion, and I think the long-term effect would be warping to her personality.

(Of course, that's the psychologist talking. If that is an accurate reading on her power, I doubt the series creators thought about it in quite such deep detail. (g))

Kyle was the shooter?!?!? I totally missed that. Wow. that does make a difference.

[identity profile] terrie01.livejournal.com 2005-07-11 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's what it seemed like. It could have been misleading camera tricks and cuts, but it seemed like he threw the gun used in the shooting into the water at the end.

I was putting laundry away, so it's very possible that I missed that clue. Poor Kyle. I adore him, and if he realizes! Not to mention what this will do to his relationship with his healer cousin.

Heck, what would it do to his relationship with his dad?!
