I have a while before I really need to be applying for new positions, but I have been thinking about where I would and would not like to go. South Carolina is out, due to family and politics. That is, if I have to deal with my extended family's politics all the time, I will go nuts. Also, I'd rather not go to Ohio, since they have a statewide ban on pit bulls. I don't own one, but I do own a dobie/rottie mix. They're usually #2 and #3 on the breed hit list, so a state wide ban makes me nervous.

My mom would love it if I came back to Minnesota. It's actually a place I'd like to go. Weather's not perfect, but I do love the state. And there are things I really miss, like the tai chi classes I took (haven't found anyone as good since), and the Farmer's Market, and the theaters. Boston is another place I'd like, since I have good friends there (Hi, guys!)and that part of the country is very intellectual. Though, I admit, every time I think about housing prices in the area, I have to remind myself to breathe.

Other than that, I haven't really given much thought to locations. They all kinda fall under "Well, I probably wouldn't run away screaming from them." Of course, so much of this hinges on where there are open jobs that I'm qualified for and fit what I want. Down side of lots of education is that, in some ways, it limits you as much as it opens up new opportunities.

I found that I've lived in - and really enjoyed - places I never thought I'd want to go. I fell in love with Tucson which surprised the heck out of me. I haven't been back in about 20 years but I still miss it. Not the politics, but the climate. ;-)

And I never, ever, thought I'd live in California, but here I am - and we even moved *back*. And I think we may end up staying here. (I hope so!)

So I wouldn't rule out anyplace you haven't been before, because you might be surprised. But I totally support staying away from relatives. ;-)

Yeah. I'm a hardcore social democrat and that part of the family is crazy conservative. I think some of them joined the Tea Party!

I would probably consider Asheville. The thing about the South is that the politics will cause me to spontaneously combust.

Oops, typo. I mean that I fear that combustion will happen.

You have to remember your salary is likely to be rather generous too, though, because you have such a very specific skill set, so don't let the housing prices scare you off until you've ALSO seen the salary range.

It would be great to have you here.

That is true. Part of it is also that Albuquerque has a very cheap rental market, compared to the over all cost of living, so the reversal adds to the shock.
