So I saw the movie over the past weekend. The local "alternative" paper brought it to our single, tiny indie theater. (Next weekend, they're bringing us Labyrinth. OMG! Labyrimth. On a "big" screen!) Thinking about what others have said about the movie and comparing my own thoughts, I think I benefitted from not having the director there to tell me how I should view it. Were there some similarities to RHPS? A couple. It's scifi-ish and there's music. And it ends with a wrap up in front of an onscreen audience. But that's it.

It's operatic. Which I enjoyed greatly, but, unlike musicals, opera isn't known for it's sing-along nature. I'm a big enough music nerd to enjoy the complexity of the show, but I know one person I went with really wanted a musical, with more spoken dialog.

Some of the imagery was amazing. I loved the scene with Blind Mag and Shilo, where Mag was projecting the image of Shilo's mother. There was something very ethereal and slightly creepy about the whole thing. But some of the scenes tried too hard, making for a choppy look that distracted. In fact, pretty much over all, I think this movie would have done better with a different director. One who would have focused on being the frist Repo!, rather then the second Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Oh, I almost forgot to add my thoughts on Paris Hilton. When I'd heard she was going to be in it, I admit I was extremely skeptical. But she was much better than I thought she was going to be. Which, given my expectations, honestly isn't saying much. And it worked because it was Paris Hilton behaving like we expect Paris Hilton to behave. And yet, one of the people I saw it with didn't recognize her until the post-surgery scene, because he didn't know she was in it.

I think you benefited from not having the director there, too.

With that said? I'm going back this weekend, I think, and it should be niftyfun.

Awesome that Labyrinth is showing up on the big screen! I was THRILLED when it came to Boston for the big screen.
