The Devil you Know by Mike Carey. Carey has written for a long list of comic book series, including Lucifer, Sandman and Hellblazer. These last three are the ones worth mentioning in this context, because The Devil you Know is very reminicent of those titles. The main character, Felix Castor, is a professional exorcist who has left the profession to try and make a living as a slight-of-hand magician after one hell of a screw up on his part. But, of course, this genre being what it is, he can't pay the bills and so is tempted into taking what seems to be an easy job. Of course, it's not and things get complicated, inclduing people trying to kill him. Like I said, if you enjoy the gritty urban fantasy meets hard-boiled PI genre, you will like this.

Soon I Will Be Invincible by Austin Grossman. On the other end of things, we have the superheo genre. Seriously. The story flips between two narrators. The first is supergenius, supervillan Doctor Impossible, who has just broken out of prison. Again. The second is Fatale, a cyborg who can't remember her previous life and who has just been invited to join The Champions, whose greatest member Coldfire has just gone missing. It's full of homages to all the greats of superherodom, and I had a blast going "Oooo, that's a reference to --"

Ooo, thanks for these! They both sound well worth picking up.
