I need a new job
Jul. 22nd, 2006 02:06 pmFor the most part, I love the people I work with. I enjoy the work I do. I'm getting damned tired of the patrons. Working with the public gives you the worst view of humanity. I guess I'm just having one of those days where everything annoys me. People who go into an absolute tizzy over our printer/copiers (OMG, I'm not going to be charged if someone prints while I'm copying, am I? Um , no, why would we set up our network like that? That would be stupid, which we are not), people who confuse me with the reference librarian (See that sign over me desk? It's says circulation) and people who can't follow our simple rules: no food, no drinks without sealable tops -- those flimisy plastic lids don't count, and NO CELLPHONES. It's the last one that makes me want to bring a spray bottle of water to work with me. "Bad patron. *Squirt*" People have ALL sorts of excuses as to why their not really breaking the no cellphones rule. They're hanging up in ten seconds, they forgot to turn it off, so had to take this call, they're only listening, not talking... Believe me, I've heard them all. And I'm totally unimpressed. If it's not an emergency (and your kids whining about dinner is not an emergency), hang up or step outside. And talking as you leave is still against the rules, unless all you're saying is "Hang on a moment."
in an attempt to not come across as completely and totally bitter, let me say 1) It's corn season. Mmmmmmm, corn. If you don't live in corn country, I pity you. 2) Good summer for sci-fi TV. Stargate (Wheee, Vala in pigtails), Atlantis, 4400 (which is one of those shows that makes me care too much to be healthy), and now Eureka, which I'm still on the fence about, but willing to give a chance, because it looks like it has enough sense not to take itself too seriously (even if it did fall into the autsitic savant cliche for the premiere).

This may be the answer to your problem. You should be a pirate librarian. Wear an eyepatch to work and keep a crocodile in a tank in the corner. If anyone has a cell phone on in the library, lop off their cell phone at the wrist and feed the whole shebang to the crocodile. :)
