Speculation
Jul. 17th, 2005 07:17 pmSome more thoughts on HBP. Specifically, Snape.
Lots has been said by various people about why Snape may not have really betrayedthe Order. If you've been around LJ, you've probably seen the thoughts on Dumbledore's "please" and why Snape blocked Harry's curses, rather than attacking. I have one more bit to add.
Everyone assumes that it was the death of Harry's parent*s* that did Snape in. He had no clue. But, really, would Snape care what happened to James? I think not. I think he would have cheerfully done James in himself. Yet, for all Snape hates James, and all he hates Harry for being like James, have we ever seen him say a single bad word against Lily? It's possible, but I don't remember it. Now, combine that with the fact that Voldemort was willing to let Lily live (odd considering she was muggle-born).
I think it was Lily's death that drove Snape back to Dumbledore. I think Voldemort agreed to spare her at Snape's request, but killed her when she got in the way. I don't think Snape and Lily were friends, but Slughorn did note that Lily was an excellent potions student, so I'm betting they had NEWT level potions together. So I think he knew her well enough that her death shook him loose from the Death Eaters.
