Spent all last evening reading the book. Stayed up late to finish. Probably the best written of the series so far. No real big surprise, I suppose. She's getting more experience, and, unlike some authors out there, she doesn't seem to be falling in love with her characters. (*cough* Hamilton *cough* Rice). I would have liked to see more Neville, but was glad to see Luna was back. I like her.

Dude. Was not expecting Snape to be the Half-Blood Prince. Figured it out when he asked to see Harry's books after Harry cursed Malfoy in the bathroom, but... I admit, I figured it would be Riddle. Sort of an early title, before settling on "lord".

Also interesting that Riddle was a much more passive prescence than he has been in other books. The only other one where he played this little of a role was PoA. Huh. Cool that we got his back story, though. He was one creepy little kid.

I was expecting Dumbldore's death from the beginning. The chapter titles totally gave it away.

Don't forget that from a literary perspective Harry has always been defined by his status as an orphan, an outsider, and a person who couldn't bond to the supposed parental figures. In book five he bonded to Dumbledore so in book six Dumbledore must be removed from the equation and Harry's original definition - his original sense of power - must be restored.
