Today's computer WTF

So I installed a virus software update this morning. It promptly ate my internet connection, allowing my access only to a single site -- my web-based email account. I couldn't even get to Google. Spent an hour on the phone with my ISP before we figured out it had nothing to do with my connection, and everything to do with the "update." Updates that deny me access to the internet? Yeah, not so helpful.
