I was watching the 2004 National Spelling Bee on ESPN2 yesterday. Hey, I was sleepy and bored, and someone else was using the computer. I'd also read everything I'd gotten out of the library. Anyway, when they get down to two or three kids, they go to "championship" words, a list of twenty-five words considered extra-specially hard. Now, I'm a sucky speller. Anyone who's read this journal has probably noticed hundreds of minor typos. I have dyslexia and dysgraphia, and I'm often lazy. I was even worse as a kid. When I was around eight, my dad used to play a spelling game with my brother and would always try to involve me. It went something like:

Dad: Spell "widget"
Me: *blank stare*
Dad: Okay, try sounding it out. Wi-dget.
Me: *blank stare*

So I was surprised that I knew two of the championship words. The first was something I'd had around as a "word of the day" thing, "sophrosyne". It's sorta like the opposite of hubris. The other was "arete". That one made me laugh.
